Whoa! It's '90s Week!

Sing it with me! Back to life. Back to HODINKEE 1990s week.

Hey, dude.

In case the headline didn't give it away, we're diving into the watches and watch culture of the 1990s. Believe it or not, '90s now means vintage (or at least "neo-vintage"), so it's an opportune time to reconsider the timepieces that came about in the age of Kurt Cobain and Drakkar Noir – the last decade before the internet changed everything.

This week we'll revisit the most significant – and most underrated – 1990s watches, tracing the evolutions, icons, and grails of the decade that is somehow thirty years ago. We're kicking things off this morning with a direct-to-VHS movie (aka YouTube video) starring James, Danny, and Cole, who enter the Matrix (aka a Three On Three story), to share and then fight about their personal watches from the '90s. Later in the week, a certain celebrity chef goes BAM! in a very flavorful Talking Watches.

In between, we'll have lots of surprises. It'll be like '80s Week, but with slightly less hair spray.

There's plenty to love about the not-so-distant past, and while you eagerly refresh your browser for all the new content, I've rounded up a few of our most excellent '90s-related stories from the archives. Be kind and read these rewinds.

Last year, Jon Bues spoke with prop master Jonathan R. Hodges about how he sourced one of the most important watches in movies.

In-Depth: A Definitive Deep-Dive On The Freestyle Shark Watch

Danny Milton will not be covering Space Jam at all this week, so to fill the Monstars-shaped hole in our hearts we will just have to re-read his piece about The Freestyle Shark Watch. A childhood favorite, the Shark is the brightly-colored digital watch that many of us rocked in our youths. Danny blends personal narrative and researched reporting to paint a picture of how and why the Shark was such a ubiquitous part of the '90s for so many.

Interview: Worn & Wound's Chief Creative Officer Shares The Inspiration Behind A New '90s-Inspired Collab With Zodiac

Last year our pals at Worn & Wound released a very Saved By The Bell-esque collab with Zodiac. I got to chat with Zach Weiss about all of the cultural references he managed to pack into one very cool watch.

In-Depth: The Apple Watch From 1995

There was an Apple Watch in the '90s? ! Yes and no. Nothing like the smartwatch we know today, this curiosity from 1995 is still incredibly cool in its own right.
