Welcome to Dialed In, Esquire's weekly column bringing you horological happenings and the most essential news from the watch world.

It's been two years since the folks at Italian watch brand Unimatic first teamed up with the horology enthusiasts over at Hodinkee. Way back when—read: 2021–the pairing resulted in a lineup of three timepieces, each of which were rendered in Hodinkee's gray-heavy palette and finished with the kind of avant-utilitarianism for which Unimatic is so beloved. They took just three hours to sell out. And since then, fans have been patiently waiting for round two. Well, round two arrived today and allow us here at Esquire to state the painfully obvious: It does not disappoint.

This time around, Unimatic and Hodinkee opted something forward-thinking and entirely different: a duo of watches with forged carbon fiber cases, each produced in a limited run of just 250 pieces. It's the first time Unimatic has offered this material and—somewhat shockingly—both styles are currently still available to purchase at their original retail price. Granted, that's a good bit more expensive than the last go around, when things topped out at $1,395 for a GMT version of Unimatic's signature Modello Uno diver.

$2,900 at Hodinkee

The new forged carbon version of that watch goes for $2,900—a genuinely remarkable price, considering the cost of the materials utilized, like a titanium inner case that keeps things extra light and extra durable. With a 41.5mm diameter and a 11.6mm thickness, it's a burly but ultimately quite wearable piece that'll serve a seasoned traveler across timezones. Under the hood, an ETA 2893-2 automatic movement keeps things ticking along, and a 42-hour power reserve means you can set it down for a while without worry.

Complementing that blacked-out design is a $2,200 take on the Modello Quattro field watch, which takes full advantage of the marbled effect created by the forged carbon case, serving up a range of matte grays that give the watch an intricate sense of depth. The 40mm diameter lands it right at the sweet spot for most wrists, and the Sellita SW200-1 b automatic movement means it's a reliable time-teller.

Whichever one you choose, it'll be tough as nails and (nearly) as light as air, not to mention an excellent conversation-starter. The only possible hitch? If your preferred style sells out before you manage to buy it. Don't hesitate—as with all of Hodinkee's limited editions, it's only a matter of time before that very thing happens.
