Biography: Aldrich Ames is a former Central Intelligence Agency officer, best known as a KGB double agent. He was convicted of espionage in 1994 and is currently serving a life sentence.

Ames treasonous activities were for a time deemed the most significant, compromising a vast number of classified CIA assets, until the arrest of Robert Hanssen in 2001.

His espionage activities for the Soviet Union began in 1985, when he initially provided a small bundle of information intending this to be a one-time affair in return for financial. This snowballed, however, now that the Soviets had control of him.

Ames ultimately ended up handing over the names of a large number of moles in the Soviet system, including Gennady Varenik and Dmitri Polyakov.
