The City of Stirling was awarded top local government honours at the 2021 WA Tennis Industry Awards, after being nominated for the Local Government Award by the Wembley Downs Tennis Club.

The annual event – run by Tennis West and cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19 – is an opportunity to recognise the incredible work of the local tennis community, volunteers, players, clubs, coaches, and other valuable stakeholders.

The Local Government Award is given to the local government who is judged to be the most engaged with, and supportive of, tennis in their community by nomination of a local club.

Wembley Downs Tennis Club and Tennis West in their citation stated the City went above and beyond to assist the club.

“Committed to supporting the court conversion and lighting project at Wembley Downs Tennis Club, City of Stirling has been actively engaged with the club and Tennis West, and in support of championing thriving tennis communities, City of Stirling has gone above and beyond in support of the conversion of four grass courts to hard courts with lighting.

“Supporting the submission of grant applications, development applications and guiding the stakeholder engagement process, City of Stirling has played a pivotal role steeped in sound advice, direction and support for the successful outcome of a sustainable and accessible tennis facilities for the benefit of both the Club and the wider community.”

The City’s new Deputy Mayor, Cr Stephanie Proud JP, accepted the award on the City’s behalf and thanked the Wembley Downs Tennis Club for the honour of their nomination.

“A huge thank you to the Wembley Downs Tennis Club and in particular, President Janet Paterson who nominated the City for this Award,” she said.

“I commend her leadership and the visionary approach she and her executive management committee have taken for the club’s future. We have about 400 different clubs within the City of Stirling and we strongly believe sporting clubs are the lifeblood of our community.

“As with most clubs and sporting groups - all are volunteers who combine various elite skillsets and work tirelessly towards a common goal for the benefit of the wider community.”

The Wembley Downs Tennis Club upgrades have been funded by $111,817 each from the State Government’s Community Sporting and Recreations Facilities Fund, the City of Stirling and club funds.
