Can you think of the moment that inspired you to start your career?

Traveling and developing products for Reebok was my first taste of the process, and I loved it. I knew I wanted to make things and eventually do it for myself.

Being based in Florence and having lived all over the US, including in Los Angeles, tell us about the influence your surroundings can have on your daily wardrobe.

I grew up in a small town in South Louisiana called Amite. From there, I moved to Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, and Boston and split time living between Florence, AL, and NYC for over a decade. I think all of these influences helped develop my personal style. I really don’t think fashion is regional any longer. We’ve always wanted the pieces to be relevant, whether in Muscle Shoals, LA, or NYC.

Do you feel that your surroundings/travel influence your design process?

I think it can’t help but have some influence. For me, being able to travel and live in different spots throughout the journey - it’s good to let inspiration come through a personal lens that evolves yet has roots.

How do you keep your imagination invigorated/stay inspired?

I think for many creative folks, or at least for me, it’s not like something you turn on and off.

Billy Reid is about more than just making clothing. You’ve shared that community and hospitality are at the core of your brand values. What are you most grateful for in the Billy Reid community?

I am most proud to have been a part of really helping shape our community here in the Shoals. Being able to bring people into our company from different regions and countries to live here and have them love the area and bring their creative energy - really has an impact on the vibe. Seeing young people pursue creativity and dig into the music legacy of the Shoals, it’s just awesome to be a part of that.

What in your life are you most proud of? Why?

Well, I would say my family, but that might not be what you’re looking for. I would have to say the resiliency and overcoming so many challenges. To rise to success and lose everything is humbling. It was an epic upheaval, but it made me stronger and helped prepare me for what would be several challenging times throughout my career.

Describe your 3 very favorite items in your closet.

Grey Worsted Wool benchmade William Reid tTousers from my Fall 2001 collection - I still wear them constantly. My first denim shirt, which is now the Shoals Denim Shirt - it was made here in Alabama in 2004. An LSU DIY sweatshirt I made when I first moved to Florence after 9/11 - I found a vintage Russell sweatshirt at a church thrift store and applied letters.

Do you have a daily practice or mantra when it comes to getting dressed?

Not really. I’m pretty simple and have a simple closet - it all depends on what I’m doing for the day. If I have meetings, trips, or events - I like to plan ahead and have everything laid out and ready.
