Izak Krei

“The gods’ job is to plan. Man’s job is to bleed.”

by Joshua Aaron Smith

Part 1

Chaos brings strange gifts. For Izak Krei, an ambitious prodigy among the assassins of the kayazy, the chaos of the Infernals’ war brought the assassination of his patron by rival kayaz and forced him to hide in a Morrowan monastery. The chaos of this new life brought both insight and doubt. Five years later, the chaos of the Orgoth’s return brought Krei new chances for redemption…or revenge.

Part 2

Izak Krei is not a small man, although his bulk is mainly muscle after years of assassin’s training and hard work in the monastery. His face – most of his body, in fact – is covered in scars earned during his former life. Izak grew out his hair and beard while in hiding. He has kept the long hair, but has recently shaved since setting out. He wears a long scarf if he needs to obscure his face. His garb is common for a Khadoran peasant: simple hat, tunic, and pants, covered with a long coat. The primary difference is that his coat sleeves hide two spring-loaded sheathes for his long knives. A thick tome of Morrowan scripture and prayers hangs from a bandolier around his neck – a tome that Izak still studies and struggles to fully understand.

Part 3

The best in-game character moment for Izak was when he was waiting in a bar full of toughs for a contact to show up. He had to take his scarf down to eat and drink, and one of the locals recognized him from the old days. The thug sidled up and made a few quiet threats before Izak decided things had progressed far enough.

Initiative was rolled, and unsurprisingly Izak went first. He used the fork already in his hand as an improvised weapon and jammed it right into the thug’s trachea. Good roll, plus sneak attack with the Silencer ability meant a dead thug who didn’t make any noise apart from a raspy gurgle.

Still, killing a guy in the middle of a bar wasn’t great for trying to stay under the radar. Izak immediately followed up with a Sleight of Hand check to try and sneakily position the thug’s body to lean against the counter. Passive perception of the other thugs was 11. Izak rolled low and totaled…12. Phew.
Izak finished his drink next to his new, very still friend and tried his best to look nonchalant. His contact showed up and the two of them made a hasty exit. The body fell over as they left.

Katya Volgem

“Everybody and nobody”

by Frank P. Sutton

Part 1

Katya Volgem is an Umbrean operative who worked for different factions during the occupation of Llael. Her loyalty to Umbrey puts her at risk of running afoul of political interests both in and outside of Khador that have sought to prey on the volozk since the death of its Great Prince. Katya continues her patriotic work under the guise of hunting the Infernal menace within Khador’s borders.

Part 2

Katya can wear many disguises, and some say she can change her own face. When herself she is a tall Umbrean woman with an aquiline nose and her black hair in a tight bun. She often wears black riding boots, loose, wool trousers, a belt with decorative buckle, a red bodice, a cropped jacket, goggles, fingerless gloves and a neck scarf. She carries a rapier and hand cannon when she needs to go loud.

Part 3

Engaged by the local Prikaz to investigate members of the Ebon Coil operating in Laedry, Katya disguised herself as an adjunct with forged documentation. After gathering the evidence needed and reporting to her superior, she was ordered to kill a Koldun Lord. Her infiltration was successful.
