We’ve lived on sustainable couches and sofas for years — these are our favorite brands that are non-toxic, use natural fabrics and ethical manufacturing, and are super durable.

Whether you’re working from home (and skipping the desk for the day) or just kicking back for an evening of Netflix, your sustainable couch is a major player in your comfort. And second only to our kitchens, living rooms and thus our couches, are a key spot for connecting with the people we share our homes with—roommates, partners, kids, and pets included.

Why consider a non-toxic couch?

Choosing to go non-toxic for our everyday couch is essential for maintaining a healthy indoor environment. Unfortunately, many conventional couches contain harmful chemicals like flame retardants, formaldehyde, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can off-gas into the air and contribute to indoor air pollution. Overtime, exposure to these toxins has been linked to various health issues, including respiratory problems, allergies, and even cancer. Opting for a non-toxic couch made from natural or certified low-emission materials helps minimize exposure to these harmful substances, promoting a safer and healthier living space for all!

What sustainable materials are used for an eco-friendly couch?

Eco-friendly couches often incorporate sustainable materials such as organic cotton, hemp, linen, recycled poly, sustainably sourced and FSC-certified wood, natural latex, and recycled metal. These materials are chosen for their minimal environmental impact and renewable properties. Organic cotton, linen, and hemp reduce reliance on pesticides and fertilizers, while recycled poly diverts plastic waste from landfills. FSC-certified wood ensures responsible forestry practices, and natural latex provides a biodegradable alternative to synthetic foams. Recycled metal further offers renewable and recycled options for upholstery and frames. By opting for couches made from these eco-friendly materials, we can support environmentally conscious practices while enjoying furniture that is both stylish and sustainable.

Our criteria:

Our editors have lived with and researched the top sustainable furniture brands for over a decade. For this list, we’ve selected our favorite sustainable couches and sofas using safe and sustainable materials and manufacturing processes that will last a lifetime. We continually add new picks to the list that meet the criteria below.

  • SUSTAINABLE/ECO-FRIENDLY | Made with natural, organic, recycled, and responsibly-sourced materials, these non-toxic couches are built using these sustainable and low impact materials that are better for our indoor environment and our planet.
  • DURABLE | Each of these non-toxic couches are made of long-lasting, durable, and high quality materials that will retain their shape and integrity for years to come.
  • AFFORDABLE | Couches can be pricey, and non-toxic couches can be even more expensive – fortunately there are tons of sustainable and clean couches that are beautiful, functional, and within your budget. We’ve made sure to include them all on this list!

And while you’re shopping for a new eco-friendly couch, why not add a nontoxic rug or some wall art? (You can even upgrade your sleep situation with one of these organic and eco-friendly mattresses.)
