We are now fully booked for this Summer Experience.

The Young International Development Expert Summer Experience gives students aged 15-18 a fully-immersive experience of working in international development in London.

Over the course of 15 days, students will have some of the most exclusive experiences of development that one can imagine: represent the UN Security Council in conflict resolution at a leading UK policy department, design your own advocacy campaign for a world-renowned NGO and pitching a sustainable business model to a multinational company.

Design Your Own Summer Experience:

    1. days 1-15 (the full experience); or
    2. days 1-10 only; or
    3. days 1-5 only

Immersive Experiences Days 1-5

Development Aid: Inequality and Education

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of humanitarian development
  • Acquire the skills needed to work in humanitarian aid
  • Find out what constitutes a humanitarian approach and explore shifts within the field
  • The development aid dilemma: short term need vs systemic conflict and inequality
  • Work in teams to tackle a humanitarian project: look at education and inequality in an urban area
  • Consider ethical questions and balance priorities
  • Present your long-term development strategy and proposals to the experts

Policy, Peace Building and Conflict Resolution

 

  • Discover the factors that drive decisions and learn the role of diplomacy on the world stage
  • Tackle a UN-style conflict scenario and work in teams to restore peace
  • Explore tactics used to defuse tensions, build relationships and end suffering
  • Represent the UN Security Council as you work to form a collective resolution
  • Negotiate a compromise factions as you balance national and international priorities
  • Resolve the conflict scenario and vote on your negotiated resolution

Sustainable Development: & Diplomacy: Enter Cop 28

  • Gain an insight into the history of the Paris Agreement and the Conference of the Parties from top experts
  • Take the lead! Become a representative and spend time gathering research to support you in negotiations in order to achieve your climate goals!  
  • Learn top negotiation tips from the experts: What are you willing to give away? What do you need to fight for? How can you win over an opposing view without compromising your must haves?
  • Take the lead! Enter negotiations and advocate for your party
  • Adapt intergovernmental and governmental targets to mitigate damage by focusing on reducing emissions and increasing carbon sinks globally
  • Present your solution to industry experts and receive live feedback

Emergency Relief Work: Crisis Response

  • A national state of emergency is declared following a devastating natural phenomenon. Can you provide urgent relief and aid to the surrounding area?
  • An emergency council is created: work in teams to create an action plan to manage the consequences
  • React quickly and effectively to an evolving situation
  • Set out a step-by-step guide to a sustainable future
  • Present your sustainable agenda to governmental officials for adjudication

This Summer Experience is for students aged 15-18 and you do not require any prior knowledge to attend.

The programme starts on 28th July 2023. You can choose to attend for either days 1-5, days 1-10 or days 1-15; and either with or without accommodation. Pricing for all options is set out below.

When is the deadline for registering for an experience?
Places on our programmes are allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis so we will close registration as soon as we reach capacity, because of this we would always recommend booking as soon as possible to ensure you do not miss the opportunity to attend.
Do I get a certificate?
Upon completion of the programme you will receive a bespoke certificate to include in all of your future applications. This will help you stand out from the crowd and show your passion for your chosen career. Letters of attendance are also available upon request at info@investin.org.
Who are your safeguarding team?
On each Summer Experience, we have safeguarding team members on-site 24/7 to promote the safeguarding and pastoral welfare of our students. Our team are security-vetted (enhanced DBS-checked) professionals who work in education full time and our team is made up of Academic Professionals / LSA, Safeguarding Officers, Nursing Professionals, and Mental Health Practitioners. Students will therefore always be able to easily contact a guardian, should they need any support.
What is your accommodation package?
You can choose to add our accommodation package to your booking where you will be allocated to the University of London's Garden Halls, College Hall, or International Hall. Here, you will enjoy your own private room, 3 meals a day, and 24/7 guardianship. There are also lots of communal areas such as a games room and cinema room where you will be able to socialise with other students. Our safeguarding team will also put on evening activities such as trivia night, games night, and sports evenings.
Do you offer payment plans?
We offer payment plans for our Summer Experiences, allowing you to pay in instalments. A 50% deposit is required to reserve your place. To arrange your personalised plan contact contact us at info@investin.org.
Will there be any opportunities for rest days?
On the mornings of day 6 and day 11 you will have rest time to allow you to recharge for the next period of your programme. You will also have time in the evenings and during your lunch break to relax and socialise with the other students on the experience.

There are no travel restrictions in place in order to enter the UK; you are not required to test or to provide proof of vaccination status, so you can book your programme place with confidence.
