The reputation of Horizon Yachts is such that dreams of exploring remote waters can quickly become reality. While it is all too easy to be swept away by the thoughtful luxury and encompassing fit-out of the interior when considering this E73 (73 for 73 feet or 22.25m), a few minutes evaluating some external aspects can immediately lead to imaginings of peaceful interludes in exotic locations.

The ability to simply and safely anchor when away from the madding crowd cannot be over-rated, whether it be in a genuinely exotic spot or your favourite local secluded bay. An examination of the foredeck hardware and anchoring equipment can quickly reveal if a yacht has been properly designed for genuine adventuring. This Horizon scores well with dual Maxwell anchor winches controlling a pair of 60kg stainless steel anchors on 250 feet of half-inch high-tensile galvanised chain and monitored by Maxwell chain counters and anchor cameras. Associated bollards and fairleads are excellent too and, for those who prefer to just chill out, the foredeck has a large sunpad and a forward-facing lounge from which the surrounding scenery can be admired.

UP WE GO

From the platform, gracefully curved steps lead up to a fully shaded, teak-soled aft deck with a near full beam lounge and height-adjustable coffee/dining table along with entertaining facilities. There is a lower control station and more curved steps across to port lead to the top deck, while from the aft deck sliding doors open for a wide passageway into the saloon. The furnishings here are quite gorgeous, with an interior decorator’s expertise seen in the selection of carpets, fabrics, upholstery and timberwork.

Large lounge-settees are to starboard with artisan-quality storage cabinetry to port — even overhead is a work of art in glass and timber. A step or two up and forward leads to the chef-standard-equipped galley with a Miele KM5600 stove and 5040BM oven, a Fisher and Paykel French door fridge/freezer, a Miele G4570SCVi dishwasher and washer/dryer, a Vintec wine fridge, dual Uline combination fridge/icemakers and a garbage compactor. Further forward at this level is a dining or relaxing area beneath the sensually sloping front windows that stream light to the interior, while superbly engineered aircraft-style doors lead out to the side decks.

On the lower level of the Horizon are three staterooms with two bathrooms forward while aft, behind the engine room, are crew or further guest accommodations including another fridge and full-size chest freezer for extended stays. Throughout the E73, the atmosphere is controlled by Marine Air air conditioner units with a ‘Tropical’ upgrade to handle equatorial conditions when needed. Other features of the interior include electric blinds for the windscreens, six TV sets fed by dual Raymarine ST60 satellite domes, and a Bose V35 Lifestyle audio system.

WHAT ABOUT THE DRIVE?

A further upgrade for this E73 is in the engine room where twin Caterpillar C32 1,600hp diesels have been meticulously installed and maintained with less than 700 hours in the log sheets. Driving through ZF 2060A transmissions, the Cats can cruise the E73 at 20 knots and power on up to around 29 knots depending on conditions. Fuel tanks totalling 7,700 litres give an optimum cruising range while a Seafari water maker extends the 1,500L of freshwater tankage. A pair of Onan gensets (22.5 and 13.5kW) keep the electrons flowing to all the onboard equipment — the gensets were recently equipped with an Onan remote auto-start function. 

The pilothouse top level of the Horizon features a state-of-the-art helm position with triple Raymarine multifunction hybrid touch-screen displays, CP450 and CP100 depth-sounders with ‘Down Vision’, a third Raymarine sounder that has been installed as back-up, and controls for the ABT 38hp hydraulic bow and stern thrusters plus for the TRAC Zero Speed Stabilizers. A pair of impressive Stidd helm chairs will keep the skipper and first mate comfortable, while a Yacht Controller further aids manoeuvering in confined spaces.

Behind the fully enclosed pilothouse is an open deck area with a wet bar, gas barbeque and fridge/freezer for yet another area to relax and entertain, this time with commanding views from the additional height above the waterline. 

This Horizon E73 is immediately available and benefits from new batteries, new sunpad covers, fresh antifoul and Prop-Speed and a recent cut and polish. Also recently, fine-tuning of the propeller characteristics now delivers an even more impressive fuel burn at 20 knots of around 110L/h per side. Loads of refrigeration is another key feature!
