Phillipe Briand SY200

Zero emissions was the aim of this game, and the latest concept from Phillipe Briand may be set to achieve it

Phillipe Briand is known for pushing the limits of what is considered possible. From his work in Vitruvius Yachts producing superyachts with an astronomical range of 9000nm to sailing yachts in Phillipe Briand Ltd, he is consistently striving for innovation. The SY200 is no different.

Featuring a traditional sail rig, the 60m, 490-tonne sloop differentiates itself from the crowd in a rather unique way. Rather than including an engine, as is often seen on other sailing yachts lately, the SY200 is fully wind propelled, reaching a potential 20kt in optimal conditions. Harnessing this to provide power on board sails are underwater turbines that power the batteries on board.

The hydrodynamic hull works with this so that travelling at 15kt should provide power equivalent to a 500kW generator, which is then stored in the 20-tonne onboard battery tank. Carbon fibre masts and rigging complete the package. Talk about harnessing the wind!

Elsewhere, the SY200 features the signature clean, dynamic lines, that has come to be expected from Briand’s award-winning naval architecture. Two spacious decks provide ample space for entertaining and included is a show-stopping glass coachroof on a flush deck.

Another highlight, though, is the aft steering station, with space for up 14 friends and family to come together and enjoy the ride.

Inside, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in a high-end luxury apartment. Final interior layouts can be tailored to an owner’s taste, but drawings of the SY200 showcase a large full-beam owner’s suite with his-and-hers bathrooms, an office and a private terrace with direct access to the ocean. Four guest suites are located on the lower deck, at a distance from the engine in a move not often seen, plus there's space for 12 crew.
